The City

Known as 'La Perle d'Aquitaine' (The Pearl of the Aquitaine), Bordeaux is one of those cities you never forget and often return to. Located on the banks of the Garonne river, Bordeaux is has an air of romance and mystery. With its 18th century architecture, sculptures and bourgeois residences, Bordeaux has become a Mecca for those who love fine wine, food and a more chilled out lifestyle compared with that of Paris.

Bordeaux has a history dating way back to the third century BC. The marriage of Henry II of England to the Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine married England to this Port city. From then on the whole Gironde area expanded and prospered its wine export business especially for those in England. An obsession which has continued on to this day. The French empire in the 18th century saw the city of Bordeaux expand further, becoming one of France's wealthiest hubs.

The city's squares, wide boulevards, architecture, green spaces, parks and a revamped waterfront promenade make the city an idyllic spot to discover boutique stores, restaurants and wine bars. With something to be found on every corner, a good way to get around is simply walk and experience the ambience of the city.

The city centre of Bordeaux has a huge selection of restaurants, from fine dining, Michelin starred cuisine to traditional restaurants and Asian fusion. Add to this the wide selection of wine bars littered around the cobbled streets and you can see why Bordeaux has become a haunt for food and wine lovers from all over the world.
